A couple days ago we officially made the switch to cloth napkins (instead of paper napkins) for our breakfasts, lunches, and dinners at home.  Here are four reasons why you might consider making the same choice:

  1. It saves money, as you no longer have to buy paper napkins, or use paper towels as napkins.  I don’t think there will be any extra cost for laundering the cloth napkins, as they can just get thrown in with any load of laundry, with having to add extra detergent.
  2. It reduces the amount of paper products you consume, and waste you generate.  Take our dinner napkins for example: We use three per night, which is about 90/month, which is 1080 napkins a year, just from dinnertime.  That’s a big stack of napkins we’ll no longer be throwing out!
  3. It’s so much more classy.  Seriously- using cloth napkins adds elegance to any meal.  It’s hard to feel deprived when your table is set like a hotel restaurant.
  4. It’s fun!  Our four-year-old daughter loves picking out the napkin rings (we have about two-dozen mismatched ones- easy to find at a thrift store or yard sale).  Suddenly, setting the table doesn’t seem like a chore to her.

  1. I also send a cloth napkin in my boys' school lunch!

  2. That's a great idea! I'll have to do that when my daughter goes to school next year. I need to get more cloth napkins, though- we have 12 total, and last night for dinner 11 were still in the hamper, unlaundered. Maybe I just need to do my laundry more often!
